The Mahindra XUV700 is undoubtedly a very popular SUV in India. However, people forget that it only comes with an AWD system and not a full-fledged 4X4 system. Now, despite knowing this, some people still take this SUV off-roading. And what happens next? They, of course, get stuck. Recently, showing one such similar situation, a video has been shared online. Thankfully, this XUV700 was rescued by a true off-roader – Pajero 2.8 SFX.
Mahindra XUV700 Rescue
The video of this rescue mission by the first-generation Pajero has come courtesy of Ayush Verma from YouTube. It starts with the presenter showing the first-generation Pajero SFX. He then states that he, along with his few friends, is going for a little off-road excursion.
Next up, he shows his friends Mahindra XUV700 and Toyota Fortuner Sigma 4X4. Following the introduction, they reach the specially created off-road proving ground. There were a few different obstacles including a steep slope and ground undulations.
During this, the Fortuner driver directly attempts the steep slope. However, the vehicle gets stuck after not going up far. Following this, Mahindra XUV700 driver takes his SUV through the alternate ditches. During this, his left front wheel gets stuck.
After trying to get the SUV out by itself, he gives up and his friends come for help. The presenter then parks his Mitsubishi Pajero SFX and ties a rope to the rear of the XUV700. Soon after this, he pulls the vehicle and the XUV700 gets rescued.
Following the rescue, the Mahindra XUV700 driver once again attempts the same obstacle. However, this time around, he again gets stuck. This time around, although he could cross the obstacle, he could not reverse his SUV and bring it out.
AWD SUVs should not be taken off-roading: Here’s why!
For those who may not be aware, the Mahindra XUV700 does not come with a dedicated off-road system. Rather, it gets an All-wheel drive (AWD) system. Generally, these types of SUVs can be excellent for moderate off-road conditions.
They offer better traction and stability compared to their two-wheel-drive counterparts. However, they’re not always the best choice for hardcore off-roading. One reason is their lack of specialized features found in dedicated off-road vehicles.
Off-roading SUVs come equipped with features such as locking differentials, low-range gearing, and advanced suspension systems. And these features are crucial for navigating through challenging terrains like deep mud, rock crawling, or steep inclines where maximum traction and control are necessary.
On the other hand, AWD systems in SUVs are designed with a bias towards on-road performance rather than off-road capability. This means they cannot provide the same level of torque distribution needed for extreme off-road situations.
AWD systems are generally seen in SUVs with body-on-frame chassis. Because of this, they are not as rigid as ladder-on-frame chassis SUVs. Hence, they do not perform as well as them on off-road terrains.
Overall, AWD SUVs can handle light to moderate off-road adventures. However, they are not the best choice for tackling truly challenging terrains. Mahindra sells the Scorpio-N and Thar 4X4 SUVs that come with both – ladder-on-frame chassis and proper off-roading equipment.
