Tata Motors, the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has declared the Tata Punch EV as the official car for the IPL 2024 season. The recently debuted Punch EV was also the official car for the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024.
In previous years, Tata has actively participated in Indian Premier League promotional activities, engaging fans through contests and awards. Notably, Tata has presented the ‘Electric Striker’ award to players and contributed to charitable causes when the official car was hit beyond the boundary during matches.
For instance, when RCB women’s player Ellyse Perry struck the Punch EV’s window, Tata donated Rs 5 lakh towards installing solar panels at Tata Memorial Hospital, Kolkata, and awarded the player with the car’s broken window as a souvenir.
Over the years, Tata has established a strong presence in the Indian Premier League, beginning its sponsorship journey in 2018. Models such as the Nexon, Harrier, and Safari have previously served as official cars for the tournament. This year marks Tata’s third consecutive year as the IPL title sponsor.
Punch EV
The Punch EV looks similar to the regular Punch but with a few unique touches that show it’s electric. The front grille is closed off, hiding the charging port. It also has new, more aerodynamic wheels. However, the Punch EV is based on a different platform than its ICE counterpart.
Stepping inside, the Punch EV’s interior is comfortable and stylish. There’s enough space for five people and a decent amount of cargo room in the back. Interior features include a 10.25-inch infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, an illuminated Tata logo steering wheel with steering-mounted controls, and an HVAC panel with touch controls.
There are two battery pack options: a 25-kWh battery pack paired with a smaller motor producing 80 hp and 114 Nm of torque. A much larger 35-kWh battery pack is also available, paired with a much more powerful motor producing 120 hp and 190 Nm of torque. The larger battery pack provides an impressive claimed range of 421 km, while the smaller one has a claimed range of 315 km, making it a competitive choice in the electric vehicle segment. Real world range is usually 2/3rds of the claimed range.
The Punch EV is built tough and has all the latest safety features to protect you and your passengers. This includes six airbags, ABS with EBD for better braking, and electronic stability control to help you stay in control during tricky maneuvers. Seatbelt reminders and pre-tensioners add another layer of safety.
With prices ranging from Rs 10.98 lakh to Rs 15.48 lakh (ex-showroom), the Punch EV competes with models such as the Citroen eC3, MG Comet, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV. As the IPL kicks off with much anticipation, the association with Tata Motors further highlights the convergence of sports and sustainable transportation. With the Punch EV leading the way as the official car, Tata continues to drive innovation and engagement within the cricketing community while promoting the adoption of electric vehicles in India.
