In early April 2024, Indian car enthusiasts are in for a treat as both Toyota and Skoda gear up to unveil their latest offerings. Let’s dive into the details of these highly anticipated launches:
Skoda Superb
Launching on April 3, 2024, the Superb will be imported as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) and is expected to have a price tag of around Rs 55 lakh. Skoda plans to start assembly of the sedan later on, which may reduce the price tag.
The Superb will be available in a single, top-spec ‘L&K’ variant. Premium features such as adaptive Adaptive Auto LED headlamps, LED fog lamps with cornering function, 17-inch Stratos alloys, ventilated and massaging 12-way adjustable front seats, wireless charging, 3-zone AC, a Columbus infotainment system, a Canton sound system featuring 11 speakers, and a digital instrument cluster are expected. Safety features include nine airbags, dynamic chassis control, TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), parking assist, and emergency braking assist.
Under the hood, the 2024 Superb packs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 188 BHP and 320 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed DSG for a smooth and powerful drive. Internationally, the Superb comes with multiple engine options, but currently, only one engine option is confirmed for India.
As per recent leaks, the Superb will come in three colours: Rosso Brunello, Water World Green, and Magic Black. It will rival the Toyota Camry. Other price-wise competitors include EV sedans such as BYD Seal EV and SUVs such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan, Toyota Hilux and MG Gloster. The Superb’s return is expected to revitalize the luxury sedan segment in India. Following the Superb launch, Skoda also plans to bring back the Octavia to India.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor
Toyota will launch the Taisor, based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, on April 3 under the Maruti-Toyota partnership. Similar to other cars, the Taisor will come with minor cosmetic changes and everything else will be same as the Fronx.
On the exterior, changes such as a redesigned bumper, updated headlamps with a new LED daytime running lamp, refreshed alloy wheels, and revised taillamps are expected. For the interiors, not much is expected.
Changes such as a new interior colour scheme and materials could be offered. The Taisor will offer features similar to the Fronx. This includes steering-mounted controls, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, a 9-inch infotainment system, and much more.
Under the hood, the engine options will be same as the Fronx. This means the Taisor will be powered by the 1.2 litre petrol engine that produces 90 hp and 113 Nm of torque. There are no confirmations if the 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine from the Fronx will be offered in the Taisor. The 1.2 litre engine comes mated with a 5-speed manual or a 5 speed automatic manual transmission (AMT).
The Urban Cruiser Taisor will compete directly with established players in the sub-4m SUV segment, such as the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV300. Following the trend of other Maruti Suzuki-Toyota collaborations, we can expect the Taisor to come at a slight premium compared to the Fronx.
