The prices of new cars in India are increasing at the pace of Usain Bolt. So naturally, not everyone in the car market wants to spend a huge chunk of money on a new car. Now, because of this, people are now exploring the used car market. And if you are one of those who are looking to get a used car, here is the list of cars that you should NOT buy.
Chevrolet Tavera (Older Models)
The first car on this list is the Chevrolet Tavera MPV. Used car buyers on a budget often consider the Tavera due to its spacious interior making it suitable for large families or group travel. That is true, but its not a good buy in 2024. The primary reason to avoid this car is that getting parts and service could become a huge hassle. Chevrolet ceased its operations in India a while ago, and this has made owning the Tavera quite dicey. Also, older models of the Tavera have been reported to have reliability issues.
Skoda Fabia (Before 2015)
One of the most advanced hatchbacks from its time, Skoda Fabia is also one to avoid. It is tempting for buyers due to low prices in the used car market, robust build quality and enjoyable driving dynamics. But avoid this car. It is quite an old model now, has high maintenance costs and parts availability issues today. In addition, some owners have also reported electrical and gearbox problems. This is especially a huge concern for the models manufactured before 2015.
Fiat Punto
Offers a solid build and engaging driving experience, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Despite that, avoid buying a Punto. While a much-desire car in the 2000s, as of now, service network and parts availability are troublesome in India. A few years back, one could still consider the Punto. But as of now, your car is likely to spend a lot of time in the garage waiting for spares.
Tata Indica
Used Tata Indicas are available priced under Rs 1 lakh in the market, and this might tempt some buyers looking to save a buck. But this is another car that is too old, and its unreliability is another reason to stay away from it. Older models of the Indica have been reported to have issues with reliability and build quality over time. This then leads to potentially higher maintenance costs.
Mahindra Quanto
Next up on this list is the weird SUV Quanto from Mahindra. This SUV struggled with market acceptance due to its design, ride quality, and performance issues. More than mechanical parts, you are likely to face problems securing spares for plastic and electronics. Steer clear of this SUV – even its owners did not like theier ownership experience!
Renault Lodgy
Despite its spacious interior, the Lodgy saw poor sales and suffers from a weak resale market. Additionally, it has notable issues with parts availability and after-sales service. Very spacious interior with comfortable seating for larger families or long journeys will tempt you, but still stay clear. A vehicle that did not sell well when new in 2015 is definitely not a car to buy in 2024.
Ford Fiesta (Old Models)
With Ford having discontinued this model years ago and only recently returning to India, older Fiestas are not advisable due to high maintenance costs and difficulty finding parts.
Hyundai Getz
Old Getz hatchbacks are rare on the road. That itself means they have either been scrapped or rusting somewhere. Despite Hyundai’s reputation for reliability, the Getz as one of the older models from the brand, is best avoided. Parts procurement is doable but difficult. Additionally, its outdated safety and tech features will not entice anyone.
Maruti Suzuki Ritz
This one might shock a few of you; however, the Ritz is not a good car for those looking for a little more advanced features, but otherwise it will do a good job. So if you can get that out of your list, then it is a decent car. Let us say you should think carefully before buying this, though.
Honda BR-V
Its low popularity when new leads to challenges in finding well-maintained used examples today. Parts availability and mediocre performance further mar its appeal.
Nissan Terrano
Although the Nissan Terrano was essentially a Renault Duster, it faced issues with Nissan’s relatively sparse service network in India. It also struggled with resale value. Additionally, a lot of owners have reported dissatisfaction with cabin quality as well.
Chevrolet Sail
One of the least popular sedans from Chevrolet, the Sail was an utter fail in India. Now, given Chevrolet’s exit from the Indian market, it has become difficult to source parts and access service. The car also faced issues with build quality and performance during its time. You can find some really cheap cars, but avoid.
Fiat Linea
The Linea offered elegant styling and comfortable interiors. The Fiat Linea was a good car and remained popular for a while. However, after Fiat’s exit from the country, like other Fiat models, high maintenance costs, service network and parts availability became issues. All of these issues have made it a less desirable option in the used car market today.
Tata Manza
The early generation of the passenger cars from Tata were not known for their reliability. The Manza, which was a good car with a ton of space and comfort also suffered due to the brand’s reputation for reliability issues. So it is better to avoid this Tata sedan in 2024.
Mahindra Verito
The Mahindra Verita was originally launched as the Renault Logan. However, because of its outdated design and less than desirable driving dynamics by modern standards, this sedan did not find many homes in India. Today, most Veritos and Logans you see would be taxis. Today, finding a decent example would become a challenge in itself. So it is a that is best avoided.
Maruti Suzuki A-Star
Compact dimensions ideal for city driving and easy parking, and cute to boot. The A-Star, however, did not sell due to its size that was considered too small. At its price, people were looking for a proper 4 or 5-seater car. It was discontinued to make way for newer models. You can still find a few units, but after all these years, the cars are usually not in good shape or well-maintained. And low resale value might be an sisue for some of you. It also lacks a lot in modern features and safety standards. But if those do not matter, and you have a reliable Maruti service centre which can service and maintain, you can still consider it a decent city runabout.
Hyundai Sonata (Older Models)
The older first-generation models of the Sonata were undoubtedly luxurious. However, it always suffered from high maintenance costs. They also suffer from low resale value. So finding a good used example and sourcing parts could become a nightmare.
Mitsubishi Lancer
The Mitsubishi Lancer is one of the most popular sedans amongst car enthusiasts. It was known for its driving dynamics. However, the Lancer suffers in the used car market due to Mitsubishi’s limited service network. Sourcing parts for this sedan is also a huge hassle. If we go back 4 or 5 years, we could still call this a practical buy, but we can’t say that in 2024.
Renault Fluence
Although it was one of the most expensive and luxurious cars to come from Renault, the Fluence struggled with sales in India due to its pricing and competition. Parts availability is the main issue due to which you should avoid this car. We wish that weren’t the case as the Fluence is still a pretty attractive car to look at!
Honda Mobilio
Like the BRV, the Honda Brio based MPV Mobilio was an utter failure in India. Despite the Honda brand’s strong reputation, the Mobilio was discontinued due to poor sales. It then affected its resale value, and some owners have also criticized its interior quality and design. So like the BRV, try to avoid the Mobilio as well.
