Chinese automotive giant SAIC-GM-Wuling has launched the all-new Baojun Yep Plus in China. This latest addition to their electric lineup is based on the Yep three-door EV SUV. Most likely, it could also be launched in India as well. Most likely, it will be competing with the Maruti Suzuki Jimny electric SUV, which is also reportedly under development.

The Baojun Yep Plus is the bigger five-door iteration of the Yep eSUV. Like the smaller SUV, it also boasts a robust, boxy silhouette that is both eye-catching and functional. It now looks eerily similar to the Land Rover Defender luxury SUV.

On the front, it gets four LED light strikes on each end. The middle portion gets a high-gloss black grille. It also gets a rugged-looking front bumper with grey elements. On the side profile, it gets chunky body cladding and squarish wheel arches.

There will be a total of 28 storage spaces in the SUV. It will come with a generous boot capacity of 385 liters. As per the company, it will be expandable to a whopping 1,715 liters with the rear seats folded.

Power and Performance

The Yep Plus will be propelled by a 75kW (100bhp) electric motor. It will churn out a peak torque of 180 Nm and direct power to the front wheels. It will also come with four driving modes, namely Economy+, Economy, Standard, and Sports.

As for the battery pack, it will get a 41.9kWh battery pack from Guoxuan High-Tech. According to the company, the Yep Plus boasts an impressive range of 401 kilometers on a single charge, according to the CLTC cycle. The eSUV will also offer fast charging capabilities allowing drivers to recharge from 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes.

Baojun Yep Plus Pricing

Is it coming to India?

Back in February of this year, Rajeev Chaba, MD of MG Motor India, confirmed that a new EV will be joining the MG fleet. For those who may be unaware, MG is part-owned by SAIC-GM-Wuling. Because of this speculation, it is believed that MG is going to launch the Baojun Yep Plus based SUV in India.

Will compete with Jimny EV

There are reports that have suggested that Maruti Suzuki is working on the development of the Jimny EV. This would mean that once that is launched in India, it could compete with the Yep Plus based MG SUV. Presently, when the Jimny EV will be launched in India has not been revealed.

According to reports, it is believed that the Jimny EV could be offered with an electric motor and a 60kWh battery pack from the eVX EV SUV, which will be launched next year.
